RKV – Recognition of Prior Learning

RKV (Realkompetencevurdering) is a process where your existing skills and experience are assessed and can be recognized as equivalent to formal education. This means you may be able to shorten your education significantly.

What counts as prior learning?

  • Work experience: Skills you've developed through employment
  • Courses: AMU courses, company training, certifications
  • Volunteer work: Skills from associations, clubs, or voluntary organizations
  • Self-study: Things you've learned on your own

How does RKV work?

  1. Contact the school offering your desired education
  2. Provide documentation of your experience (CV, references, certificates)
  3. An assessor evaluates your competencies
  4. You receive a report showing which parts of the education you can skip

Benefits

  • Shorter education time
  • Recognition of what you already know
  • Often free or low cost
  • Can motivate you to pursue education
Example: If you've worked as an unskilled carpenter for 10 years, much of that experience may count toward a carpentry education, potentially cutting years off your training.
