Introduction

Learn about the labor market situation and why education as an adult can be the right choice.

A changing labor market

The Danish labor market is undergoing a transformation. Technological development, automation and changing needs mean that the demand for skilled labor is increasing – while the need for unskilled workers is decreasing.

If you are unskilled and looking for work, this development is important to understand. It doesn't mean it's impossible to find a job without an education, but it does mean that competition for these jobs is increasing.

The numbers are clear

According to the Danish Labor Market Balance, Denmark will be missing approximately 99,000 skilled workers by 2030. At the same time, there will be a surplus of about 59,000 unskilled workers.

The labor market by 2030:
  • Shortage of 99,000 skilled workers
  • Surplus of 59,000 unskilled workers
  • 3 main schemes for adult education

These numbers show a clear trend: skilled labor is becoming increasingly valuable, while the pool of unskilled jobs is shrinking.

What does it mean for you?

If you are unskilled, you have essentially two options:

  1. Continue as unskilled – and compete for a declining number of jobs
  2. Get an education – and gain access to a larger job market with better opportunities

The second option may seem challenging, especially if you've been out of the education system for a long time. But the good news is that there are many options and support schemes specifically designed for adults who want to become skilled.

Advantages of education as an adult

There are several good reasons to consider education as an adult:

  • Better salary – Skilled workers typically earn significantly more than unskilled workers over a lifetime
  • More job opportunities – With an education, you gain access to more jobs and industries
  • Greater job security – Skilled positions are typically more stable and less exposed to automation
  • Personal development – Education provides new skills, networks and increased self-confidence

Your options

In Denmark, there are several schemes specifically designed to help adults become skilled:

  • RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) – Get credit for what you already know
  • Education Upgrade – Complete an education while unemployed with special financial support
  • Adult Apprentice – Become an apprentice as an adult with higher salary

In this module's guides, we go through each of these schemes in detail – so you can find the one that suits your situation best.

Summary

The labor market is changing, and the demand for skilled workers is increasing. As an unskilled worker in Denmark, you have access to several schemes that can help you get an education – often with financial support and recognition of your existing experience.

Remember: It's never too late to start an education. Many adults successfully complete educations every year – regardless of their starting point.
