Video interview

Video interviews have become more common. They require a different kind of preparation than in-person interviews. Here's how to present yourself best through screen.

Technical preparation

The technical aspects can make or break your impression. Make sure to:

  • Test the software: Download and test the video tool (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet) the day before
  • Check your internet: A stable connection is essential – use cable if possible
  • Test audio and video: Make sure your microphone and camera work properly
  • Have a backup plan: Share your phone number in case of technical problems

Your physical setup

Lighting

Good lighting makes a big difference:

  • Sit facing a window or light source – not with your back to it
  • Avoid harsh overhead lighting that creates shadows
  • Natural daylight is best, but a desk lamp can work too

Background

Keep it simple and professional:

  • A clean, uncluttered background works best
  • A plain wall or bookshelf is ideal
  • Avoid busy patterns or distracting items
  • Make sure nothing embarrassing is visible

Camera position

  • Position camera at eye level – use books to elevate your laptop if needed
  • Sit at arm's length from the camera
  • Center yourself in the frame

During the interview

Eye contact

This is the biggest challenge with video interviews:

  • Look into the camera, not at the screen
  • It feels unnatural, but it creates eye contact for the viewer
  • Practice beforehand so it becomes more natural

Body language

  • Sit up straight and lean slightly forward to show engagement
  • Nod and react to show you're listening
  • Use hand gestures naturally, but keep them in frame
  • Smile – it comes through even on video

Audio

  • Mute yourself when not speaking if there's background noise
  • Speak clearly and slightly slower than normal
  • Use headphones to avoid echo

Common challenges

Challenge Solution
Connection problems Have phone number ready, offer to call instead
Audio echo Use headphones or earbuds
Awkward silences Count to 2 before answering – delays are normal
Distractions at home Inform household, close the door

Your checklist

15 minutes before the interview:

  1. Close unnecessary programs and browser tabs
  2. Turn off notifications
  3. Check lighting and camera angle
  4. Test audio one more time
  5. Have water and notes nearby (but out of frame)
  6. Join the meeting 5 minutes early

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Not testing beforehand: Technical issues are unprofessional
  • Looking at yourself: Hide your self-view to avoid distraction
  • Reading notes obviously: It's visible when your eyes move
  • Casual dress: Dress as you would for an in-person interview

Try it yourself

  1. Set up your space as you would for an interview
  2. Record a test video of yourself
  3. Watch it and evaluate lighting, audio, and position
  4. Practice looking at the camera while speaking
  5. Do a test call with a friend
